Taxi operators call on police to do more to curb killings and extortion
Taxi operators, are calling for urgent action, from the relevant authorities, to curb attacks against them.
Based on their own assessment, taxi groups are reporting, that about 77 operators have been killed, since the start of the year.
In addition to being killed, taxi operators are being targeted by extortionists.
The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) said this safety and security issue, is now at crisis level.
TODSS President Egeton Newman is calling on the transportation steering committee, in the transport ministry, to prioritise the safety and security concern on the agenda.
He also wants the police force to establish a specialized unit to deal with attacks on PPV operators.
Next Tuesday, October 3, will be observed as a day of mourning, for the murdered operators.
