Taxi group says it regrets agreeing to deferral of second phase of fare increase

The head of one of the groups representing taxi operators, says he regrets agreeing to a deferral of the 16% fare increase. The increase was due to take effect on April 1.

It was the second phase of a two-part fare increase.  The first phase saw a 19% hike last October.

Days before the second phase was to take effect, the government asked for a delay in the implementation. This was agreed to by some operators.

Finance minister Dr. Nigel Clarke cited the need to maintain inflation in single digits.

However not all taxi operators supported the move.

President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) Egeton Newman now concedes that it was wrong to have agreed to delay the increase.

He is calling for a meeting with the ministers of finance and transport to further discuss the fare increase.
