Reggae Girlz to face England in historic friendly international on June 29

Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz are gearing up to face 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup runners-up, England, in a historic friendly international on June 29.

The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams and will take place at King Power Stadium, the home of former English Premier League champions Leicester City.

The marquee fixture for the Reggae Girlz come as the Hubert Busby coached team ramps up preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

For England, the reigning European champions, this will be their final fixture before heading to Switzerland for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Under the guidance of head coach Sarina Wiegman, England recently triumphed over Belgium with a dominant 5-0 victory in the first leg, but lost 3-2 in the return leg. Despite the result, they remain second in their Nations League group behind world champions Spain.

“I am really pleased to be able to play a good game to finalize our Euros preparations on English soil,” said Wiegman. “Jamaica will be a difficult test, they’re a nation we haven’t faced before, and a real opportunity for us to keep learning and growing as a team. They are building as a team themselves and have been doing really well, especially at the last World Cup. It will be a special occasion and atmosphere in a great stadium, which we have performed well at in the past.”

The Jamaicans before facing 4th ranked England are scheduled play world no.1 United States in another high profile friendly international on June 3 at Energizer Stadium in St. Louis.

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers is scheduled to kick-off in October.

The Reggae Girlz, in the meantime, suffered back-to-back defeats to Concacaf rivals Mexico in their most recent outings in April after completing a two-game sweep of South American opponents Peru in February.
