School administrators urged to increase road safety awareness among students

School administrators are being urged to increase road safety awareness among students.

Principal of the Irwin High School in St. James, Victor Newsome made the call following the death of grade seven student, Deanna Salmon on Wednesday.

Deanna was struck by a Montego Bay metro bus just outside the school’s compound.

She was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where she later died.

Deanna is the latest student to be struck by a motor vehicle near a school, following similar incidents three months ago.

On September 24, two female students of the Vere Technical High School in Clarendon were mowed down near the institution in separate incidents.

11-year-old Marla Richards died, while the other student sustained injuries.

In the wake of these incidents involving students, Mr. Newsome stressed the importance of institutions taking road safety awareness campaigns more seriously.

The principal explains that a road safety awareness campaign is already in place at Irwin High School but there is now a need to put greater emphasis on proper road use.

Mr. Newsome says while children are expected to adhere to road safety rules, motorists must also do what is necessary to keep children safe.
