Sugar produced by Pan-Caribbean Sugar Company Limited has been recalled by the National Compliance and Regulatory Authority, following laboratory confirmation of widespread metallic contamination.

This after complaints by consumers on social media.

In a statement, the authority advised that in keeping with its directives, the sugar company has commenced recall, guided by the Jamaican Standard Specification for Consumer Product Recall – Guidelines for Suppliers and the Jamaican Code of Practice for Product Recall Procedures.

Directives include immediate removal of all affected products from the marketplace; establishment of full traceability of all distributed products; notification to distributors, retailers, and consumers of the recall; conduct and submission of a comprehensive risk assessment, as well as provision of continuous updates to the authority on the effectiveness of recall actions.

The Authority has also issued a detention notice to the major distributor of Pan-Caribbean Sugar.
