Preliminary inspections underway at NMIA following runway incident involving American Airlines plane

Preliminary inspections are underway at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, following a runway incident involving an American Airlines aircraft last evening.

At approximately 9:30 P.M., American Airlines flight AA850 veered off the runway, while landing at the airport.

167 passengers and 6 crew members were on board.

There was no report of injury.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, Acting Director General of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) Nichole Morgan said an American Airlines air safety investigator, along with the airline’s maintenance team, are in the island to conduct further investigations.

In the meantime, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said the incident was serious.

It resulted in damage to the aircraft, including the engine, and some airport infrastructure.

The aircraft taxied to the gate and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.

Vaz expressed relief that no one was harmed during the incident.
