People’s National Party says Prime Minister’s intent to clamp down on fake news on social media is a threat to free expression
The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) says it views Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ declaration of his intent to clamp down on fake news on social media as a direct threat to free expression and privacy.
At the weekend, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said his administration has been tracking down those who use social media for defamation purposes, and action will be taken against them in short order.
However, the PNP says while addressing misinformation is crucial, the Prime Minister’s approach dangerously overreaches and undermines democratic principles and constitutional rights.
Spokesperson on Information and Public Communication, Nekeisha Burchell has chastised Mr. Holness for what she calls his selective outrage.
