NSWMA assures that its enforcement teams taking necessary steps against persons or entities who do not dispose of waste properly

The National Solid Waste Management Authority(NSWMA) has sought to assure that its enforcement teams are taking the necessary steps against persons or entities who do not dispose of waste properly.

This as the issue of illegal dumping continues to pose environmental concerns in the country.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, NSWMA’s Executive Director, Audley Gordon says his agency has not relented in the fight to hold non-compliant citizens accountable.

Under the National Solid Waste Management Act, the NSWMA has the power to ticket and charge offenders up to $10,000 per violation.

Mr. Gordon notes, however, that while his teams do their part to keep Jamaica clean, there must be a culture of cleanliness and responsibility among citizens.

He maintains that citizens must play an integral role by making positive changes that will protect the environment.

In February, the Government noted that it would be proceeding with plans to introduce legislation to impose stiffer penalties for improper waste disposal.
