National Stadium rapidly falling apart

General Manager at Independence Park Limited Major Desmond Brown has admitted to Irie Fm Sports that the National Stadium in Kingston is quickly falling apart.

The Stadium was built for the 1962 CAC Games and has only undergone one major redevelopment when Jamaica hosted the World Junior Championships in 2002.

Major Brown says things are in a terrible state at the Stadium.

Sport Minister Olivia Grange indicated earlier this year that the upgrade of the National Stadium will begin next year, increasing its capacity to 40,000 from its current 35,000.

The Government said in 2022 that US$76 million or JM$11.6 billion would be spent on the stadium’s renovation.

Grange says the ministry is expected to receive the funds from the Ministry of Finance in the coming weeks and is optimistic that work will commence in 2025 so the stadium will be fully operational in 2028.
