The number of people charged under the new Firearms Act has increased to more than 80.

This, according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer held under the theme ‘Heal the Family, Heal the Nation’ today (January 4), Mr. Holness said he will need the support of the church in doing a national campaign to change the ‘gun culture’ in the country.

Noting that the new Firearms Act was passed last November, Mr. Holness gave an update on the charges proffered so far.

The Prime Minister said the society must send a strong signal to criminals.

At the same time, he said government has a responsibility to ensure youths are informed about the consequences of taking up guns.

In this regard, he said a campaign will be launched targeting school children.
