More stakeholders express concern about provisions under new Bail Act

More concerns have been raised about possible infringements on people’s rights to bail, following statements made by Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Marlene Malahoo Forte, about a new Bail Act.

During her Sectoral Debate presentation yesterday (June 7), Mrs. Malahoo Forte pointed to some provisions coming in the Act.

One such provision, would not allow the granting of bail to people with a murder charge.

The Minister’s comment has been met with backlash from some members of the legal fraternity and the Opposition.

Another political party, The United Independents’ Congress (UIC) has weighed in on the matter.

Speaking with IRIE F-M news, Chairman of the UIC, Winston Wright expressed concern that the new provision is another plot to take away the rights of Jamaicans.

He said he fears that the language of natural justice, the presumption of innocence and the right to due process are being written out of the country’s legal system.
