Reggae lovers are preparing for a major celebration on Monday, May 25, as the late reggae icon Sugar Minott will be honoured with a special birthday tribute marking what would have been his 70th birthday.

The free event, being organized by Minott Movements, forms part of a wider celebration for African Liberation Day and will take place at the Youth Promotion HQ located at 1 Robert Crescent in Kingston 5.

Several respected reggae and dancehall artistes are scheduled to perform in tribute to the legendary entertainer. Among the performers expected are Junior Reid, Michael Palmer, Turbulence, Nature Ellis, Sister Carol, Tony Curtis and Horace Andy. Also set to participate are Minott’s children Blaw, Blae and Pashon Minott along with other entertainers and supporters of his musical legacy.

Born Lincoln Barrington Minott, Sugar Minott rose to international prominence as a singer, songwriter and producer whose smooth vocals and conscious lyrics helped shape reggae and early dancehall music. Widely regarded as one of Jamaica’s most influential musical figures.

Sugar Minott died on July 10, 2010, after suffering complications related to a heart condition.

More than a decade after his passing, his music and contribution to Jamaican culture continue to resonate with reggae fans around the world.
