Michael Ibo Cooper has died

Renowned musician Michael Ibo Cooper has died. He was 71 years old.

Entertainment Minister Olivia Grange said he died Thursday night.

Ms.  Grange expressed sorrow and dismay over his death, which she said followed that of his son Arif and his wife.

She stated that he gave tremendous service to the Ministry in an advisory capacity in the area of music.

The Entertainment Minster has sent condolences to his immediate family circle, to members of Third World Band, of which he was a founding member and to the music fraternity.

Meanwhile, Prime Minster Andrew Holness has paid tribute to Ibo Cooper saying the country has lost another musical icon.

He said he is deeply saddened at the passing of one of Jamaica’s most talented and prolific musicians.

The Prime Minister said most Jamaicans were exposed to his prowess on the keyboards and his energetic performances with the Grammy-nominated band Third World.

He also played for the group Inner Circle.

Mr. Holness described Ibo as a true cultural ambassador, taking reggae music and brand Jamaica to the farthest corners of the world.

Ibo also taught  music at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Mr. Holness said Ibo has left a legacy of excellence buttressed by his talent, endearing personality and passion for his family, music and country.

Opposition leader Mark Golding said Jamaica is saddened by the  passing of Michael “Ibo” Cooper, one of the leading figures in the rise of reggae music to becoming an international cultural force.

He said Ibo was also a man of ideas with a passion for national development, adding that he recognized the central role of music, as a force for positive change, and was always looking for ways to advance the entertainment industry.
