Messi stars the show in Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers

Football legend Lionel Messi came to Argentina’s rescue last night as he powered the world champions to a vital one nil win over Ecuador in the first round of the South American World Cup qualifiers.

The world cup winning captain scored from a free kick in the 78th minute to give Argentina victory, and completed his 104th goal in 176 International appearances, including his 29th in world cup qualifying.

The result puts Argentina atop the standings on 3 points, the same amount as Colombia who clipped Venezuela one nil.

Elsewhere Paraguay and Peru battled to a nil all draw.

The qualifiers continue tonight with two games, with five times champions Brazil will be up against Bolivia, and Chile facing Uruguay.
