Justice Minister welcomes Court of Appeal ruling clearing the way for Paula Llewellyn to be reinstated as DPP

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has welcomed the ruling from the Court of Appeal clearing the way for Paula Llewellyn to be reinstated as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In the ruling this morning, the appeal court said the constitutional court erred when it struck down the constitutional amendment extending the tenure of the DPP.

The appeal court panel said as the incumbent, the DPP “automatically benefited” from the extension granted by the amendment.

Ms. Llewellyn, who had stepped aside from the role in April due to the controversy over the validity of her extended tenure, can now return to the post.

Speaking in an interview with IRIE FM News, Mr. Chuck said he is pleased with the decision which affirms that the extension of the retirement age for the DPP and the Auditor General is legal and constitutional.

Claudette Thompson has been acting as Director of Public Prosecutions in Ms. Llewellyn’s absence.
