JPS operations manager says company’s disaster response system in state of readiness ahead of hurricane season

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says its disaster response system is in a state of readiness ahead of the hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

JPS Operations Manager for Portland, St. Mary and St. Thomas, Rayon Jarrett explains that the power company maintains a robust system, with a Central Emergency Operating Center in Kingston.

Within each parish, there is an emergency operating unit, manned by a coordinator.

Mr. Jarrett explains that the emergency system is tested at intervals, with the frequency of testing increased during the hurricane season.

He adds that the power company has been undertaking vegetation clearance to ensure power lines are not unduly impacted in the event of a hurricane.

On the issue of safety, Mr. Jarrett warned persons never to make contact with downed power lines in the event of a hurricane.
