JLP urges Opposition Leader to clarify citizenship status; Golding says citizenship requirements for parliamentary service should be reviewed

Despite a declaration from Opposition Leader Mark Golding that he is a born Jamaican, Jamaica Labour Party Deputy General Secretary, Charles Sinclair, is calling for the Opposition Leader to provide a direct answer to the question of whether or not he is a British citizen.

Senator Sinclair says a direct answer from the Opposition Leader is necessary because Jamaica’s aspiring Head of Government being a citizen of another territory would raise serious questions of loyalty and allegiance.

Earlier in a post on his social media pages, the Opposition Leader reiterated that he was born in Jamaica and has a Jamaican passport, while noting that his father had gotten him a British passport when he was a child.

He said he has always travelled on his Jamaican passport and applies for the requisite visas when travelling.

Mr. Golding added that the issue of citizenship as it relates to who can serve in parliament, needs to be reviewed.
