JAS warns of spike in price of some vegetables as farmers count losses following severe weather last week

The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) is urging citizens to brace for another spike in the price of vegetables.

This as vegetable farmers, especially those in St Thomas and St Andrew, lost significant portions of their crops in last week’s severe weather.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 22 impacted the country on Thursday and Friday, leaving landslides and flash flooding in its wake.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, JAS President, Lenworth Fulton explained that vegetable prices were already sky-high but the recent poor weather will cause a further spike, especially during the Christmas period.

Mr Fulton noted that the damage to farmers is still being assessed by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority to provide the necessary assistance.
