Jamaica finishes with 12 medal at World Athletics Championship

Jamaica finished with an overall 12 medals at the just concluded World Athletics Championship in Budapest Hungary, after the Women’s Mile relay team of Candice Mcleod, Jenieve Rusell, Nikisha Pryce and Stacey Ann Williams were beaten on the line by Netherlands and had to settle for silver. 

The silver medal for the Black Green and Gold standard bearers was the nation’s only medal on the ninth and final day of the Championship, 

The quartet of Mcleod, Russell, Pryce and Williams clocked a season’s best time of 3 minutes 20.88 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands, courtesy of world 400 metres hurdles champion, Femke Bol snatched the gold away from the Jamaicans at the line to register a world-leading time of 3 minutes 20.72 seconds.

Great Britain claimed the bronze medal in a season best time of 3 minutes 21.04.

Meanwhile the Jamaican men’s team with 400 metres gold medalist Antonio Watson on anchor finished outside the medals in fourth place, in the men’s 4×400 metres relay as the event was won by the United States . 

The Jamaican men clocked 2 minutes 59.34 seconds, as USA won in 2 minutes 57. 31. 

Out in the field Jamaica’s Lamara Distin finished fifth in the final of the women’s high jump at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest.

Distin, who is the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion, cleared a height of 1.94m, having failed to get over 1.97m.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine won the gold after clearing 2.01m. 

Jamaica finished fourth on the medal table with 3 gold , 5 silver and 4 bronze, with the USA topping the standings with 12 gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze.
