Jamaica and Japan collaborate on building marine research vessel

Jamaica and Japan are collaborating on building a marine research vessel to conduct studies on fish stock in the region.

Minister of Fisheries Floyd Green explained that for years the government sought to get an existing research ship, but was unsuccessful due to high demand.

The minister said with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Jamaica will build its own ship.

The vessel will cost about 1.2 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the National Fisheries Authority, Dr Gavin Bellamy, said the vessel will enhance the agency’s ability to safeguard Jamaica’s marine environment.

Both men were speaking at the recent handing over ceremony of fishing boats and engines to fishers at Pagee Fishing Beach in Port Maria, St. Mary.
