Investigation launched following deaths of cop and civilian at Half-Way-Tree police station
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances which led to the deaths of a cop and a civilian, at the Half-Way-Tree police station, in St Andrew yesterday.
The detective sergeant’s identity has not been released, while the civilian has been identified, as businessman, Deon Singh.
Singh was reportedly on a criminal charge, and the policeman was the investigating officer in the case.
Reports are that at about 5:45pm, the detective sergeant was escorting Singh from the Kingston and St. Andrew parish court to the station nearby, when a tussle ensued.
Another policeman went to the detective sergeant’s assistance and Singh reportedly pulled that lawman’s firearm and opened fire hitting the detective sergeant, before shooting himself.
Head of the police’s Corporate Communications Unit, Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay said both wounded men were pronounced dead at hospital.
She said further investigations are being conducted as another policeman discharged his weapon in response to the initial explosions.
