Deliberations on NaRRA Bill halted briefly late yesterday after House Speaker suspends Opposition MP Angela Brown Burke

Voting on the contested National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) Bill was halted briefly late yesterday after House Speaker, Juliet Holness, suspended Opposition Member of Parliament Angela Brown Burke for the remainder of the sitting.

The Committee of the Whole House was examining clauses of the bill.

Mrs. Holness formally named the St. Andrew South Western M.P. and ruled that the Marshall remove her from the House following an incident involving the parliamentary mace.

The mace is a ceremonial symbol of the authority of the House and the Speaker.

Mrs. Brown Burke who was attempting to speak was not allowed.

Mrs. Brown Burke remained in the chamber flanked by other members of the Opposition.

It prompted an appeal from Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness.

After a five-minute recess, the Opposition returned to the sitting without Mrs. Brown Burke.
