Holness assures that local government election will be held next February

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has indicated that the government intends to hold the local government election, by February, next year.

The local government election, which is constitutionally due every four years, was last held in November 2016.

It was initially postponed because of the covid-19 pandemic.

Months later, the government announced that the election would be further postponed because of inadequate funds to cover the cost.

The election becomes due on February 28, 2024.

Opposition Leader Mark Golding had threatened to take the government to court, if it postpones the election yet again.

However, Holness says his administration intends to fulfil its constitutional requirements by holding the election, when due.

He was speaking during a quarterly press conference this morning.
