High Commissioner of Canada to JA recognizes vulnerabilities with farm work programme

High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica, Emina Tudakovic says Canada recognizes that there are several vulnerabilities within its seasonal agricultural work programme and is working to address them.

Speaking during a discussion on the seasonal agricultural worker program with Jamaican stakeholders she noted that efforts continue, to establish a compliance regime for employers and to ensure that workers are aware of their rights.

She said workers need to know that the jobs offered under the agricultural programme are not easy and that the hours are usually long and the work can be hard.

The High Commissioner noted that workers also need to be aware of the conditions of their employment contract and what they can do if the conditions are not being met.
