Hearing for Vybz Kartel and co-appellants continues today

The hearing to determine if dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants will face a retrial is expected to continue today.

The hearing was initially expected to end on Friday June 14 but was extended by one day.

Prosecutors are expected to wrap up their arguments today, following which defense lawyers will respond to their submissions.

Last week, the crown argued that a retrial should be held for Kartel and his co-appellants, in the interest of justice.

Meantime, the defense cited Kartel’s declining health and the financial toll that the case has taken on the entertainer as reasons why he should not be re-tried.

Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John, were sentenced to life imprisonment in April 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

Earlier this year, the United Kingdom Privy Council quashed the murder conviction and sent back the case to the local Court of Appeal to decide if there should be a retrial.
