Health Minister says discontinuation of current Jamaica-Cuban medical arrangement will not impact reopening of Cornwall Regional Hospital

Jamaicans are being assured that the discontinuation of the current Jamaica-Cuban medical arrangement will not impact the reopening of the Cornwall Regional and Western Children and Adolescent Hospitals in St. James.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton gave the assurance while being questioned by reporters during a virtual press conference yesterday.

He explained that the Cuban healthcare workers who integrated into Jamaica’s public health system served in specific areas, and measures are being implemented to fill those gaps.

Dr. Tufton said he is confident that the Ministry will be able to continue with the projected timelines.

The Government said the arrangement for deploying Cuban medical professionals in Jamaica’s public health sector was discontinued, as both Governments were unable to agree on new terms and conditions under a revised technical cooperation framework.

The previous arrangement ended in February 2023.
