Groundwork underway for renovation of historic Morant Bay Courthouse to serve as a national museum

The groundwork for the renovation of the historic Morant Bay Courthouse to serve as a national museum, is expected to be completed by the end of this financial year.

Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Eastern, Michelle Charles gave the update during her State of the Constituency Debate presentation, in the Lower House on Tuesday.

The building was the scene of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion, led by National Hero, Paul Bogle.

The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 2007.

Ms. Charles said the museum works are progressing well, with technical deliverables, as well as architectural and structural drawings, now in the development phase.
