Government to revisit how fines from traffic offence are allocated

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has indicated that government is to revisit how the fines gained from traffic offences  are allocated, with the view of using some of the funds to aid public education campaigns.

Mr. Vaz said at his first meeting with the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) as Transport Minister last month, he queried about the funds from traffic tickets.

Mr. Vaz said after being told that none of the money acquired through traffic tickets is directed to the Transport Ministry, he requested a change.

He said Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who is also Chairman of the NRSC, instructed the  ministries to create a revised plan on how funds from traffic tickets are allocated and have it presented to Cabinet.

Mr Vaz said if the Transport Ministry receives about 20% of those funds, it can go towards a public education campaign on road safety.
