Government to finalize transfer of land in Albion to Rastafari Coral Gardens Benevolent Society

The government is finalizing arrangements to transfer land at Albion Heights in Montego Bay, St. James to the Rastafari Coral Gardens Benevolent Society.

Member of Parliament for North West St. James Dr. Horace Chang made the announcement while addressing the sixty-first annual “Bad Friday” event in the community on Friday.

Each year on Good Friday, the Benevolent Society hosts the “Bad Friday” event in observance of the atrocities meted out to members of the Rastafari community in Coral Gardens in 1963.

Rastafarians were reportedly beaten, and some killed by members of the security forces under the orders of the government.

In 2017, Prime Minister Andrew Holness apologized to the community and pledged to right the wrongs.

This includes setting up a trust fund for the group and providing them with land.

Addressing members of the society on Friday, Dr. Chang reassured that arrangements will be made to have the title for the property ready.
