Government moving forward with development of total waste management system

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced that government is moving forward with the development of a total waste management system, which will see a waste to energy plant, being at the centre of the country’s waste management.

He said both the Retirement and Riverton city dumps will be closed.

Mr Holness noted that in 2016, he empanelled an enterprise team to study waste management in Jamaica, to come up with a strategy to transform the current system.

The prime minister explained how the new system will work.

Mr Holness said government will construct a sanitary landfill in the centre of the island, through a public private partnership.

He added that the National Solid Waste Management Authority, NSWMA‘s role will change with the new developments in waste management.
