Golding disappointed with government’s decision to continue annual $11.4B transfer from NHT to central government
Opposition leader Mark Golding has expressed disappointment at the government’s announcement, to continue the annual $11.4 billion transfer, from the National Housing Trust (NHT), to the central government.
Last week, Finance Minister Fayval Williams said the annual transfer will continue for another five years, from fiscal year 2026/2027, to fiscal year 2030/2031.
She explained, that given the impact of Hurricane Melissa on the island, the continuation of these transfers across the medium term, is necessary to support the sustainability of fiscal operations, while reconstruction activities, are underway.
In a video posted on his Instagram page, Mr. Golding said if the government continues to withdraw such large amounts of money from the NHT, the institution will be unable to fulfill its mandate, of providing affordable housing for Jamaicans.
Mr. Golding argued, that the NHT, should be playing a larger role in assisting the individuals, who lost their homes, during Hurricane Melissa.
