Freedom of Speech for athletes at Paris Olympic Games

Athletes at this year’s summer Olympic Games in Paris will get a chance to express themselves, on any issue in all venues except the opening and closing ceremonies, medal presentations, during competition, and during their stay in the Olympic Village.

Even though athletes will have that freedom of expression it will be subject to certain restrictions.

Athletes must respect the fundamental principles of olympism, refrain from attacking individuals, organizations, or countries, comply with the directives of their Olympic Committee or Federation, and avoid being “disruptive,” according to rules released by the IOC .

Disruptive behavior, for example, includes “expressions during the presentation or anthem” …………….of other athletes or displaying a flag or banner at that moment.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to disciplinary measures, which will be proportionate to the violation.
