Four inmates charged with murder, following death of detainee at Chapelton police lockup

Police have charged four inmates with the murder of 33-year-old Rekema Bravo, at the Chapelton police lockup in Clarendon, on Monday.

Charged are 33-year-old Rushane Williams of Sweeny District, 30-year-old Phillip Russell, a farmer of Trout Hall, 23-year-old Marlo Headly of Palmers Cross, May Pen, and 19-year-old Garrett Lindsay of Rhoden Hall.

Reports are that at about 3:15 AM, police on duty heard unusual sounds coming from one of the cells at the lockup and made checks.

Bravo was seen with a wound, which was reportedly inflicted by the other inmates. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police communications unit says an investigation into the matter was immediately launched and the four inmates were later charged.

Meantime, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a separate probe into the matter, to determine whether police negligence played a role in Bravo’s death.
