Foreign Affairs Minister says there’s no consensus on members of the diaspora serving in government

Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith says there is no consensus on the issue of members of the diaspora serving in government.

The issue was once again brought to the fore, following the revelation that opposition leader Mark Golding, is a British citizen.

While Jamaica’s constitution allows Commonwealth citizens to serve in government, many believe that it raises questions about allegiance.

Other persons have argued that if Commonwealth citizens can serve, the same should apply to Jamaicans in the diaspora.

Speaking at a post-cabinet press briefing this morning, Mrs. Johnson Smith noted that the issue is constitutional, and discussions continue.
