Telecommunications provider Flow today became the first to offer mobile customers telephone numbers with the new 658 area code.

The move followed the release of a batch of 10,000 numbers under the new code by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) in May of this year.

Flow notes that it is the first country in the English- speaking Caribbean to offer a second area code.

The company’s Commercial Director for Mobile, Dwight Williams notes that the provision of more numbers will allow new and existing customers to easily add a second mobile number.

The new 658 area code will work in conjunction with and does not replace the 876 code.

It became necessary due to the growth in mobile subscribers which contributed to the exhaustion of the 876 code that has become synonymous with Jamaica.
