Everald Warmington resigns

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Everald Warmington, has resigned.

His resignation follows controversial comments he made about withholding funds from the councillor from the opposition.

He was speaking at a political gathering, in his St Catherine South West Constituency, earlier this week.

After a video of his statements went viral on social media, there was public condemnation, and calls for him to be removed from the cabinet.

Mr. Warmington sought to clarify the statements and apologized for the comments.

However, in a statement this afternoon, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said he met with Minister Warmington, today.

He noted that at the end of the meeting, he received Mr. Warmington’s resignation from the cabinet.

The prime minister said he thanked the MP for his service in that capacity and Minister Warmington expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

Meanwhile, Jamaicans For Justice, (JFJ), has welcomed the resignation of Minister of Works, Everald Warmington.

The advocacy group had urged Jamaicans to join it in demanding that Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, removes Mr. Warmington from his ministerial duties.

JFJ’s Executive Director, Mickel Jackson, noted that Mr. Warmington had a long list of infractions that made him unworthy of the office he held.

She said his resignation sends the signal that the prime minister is listening to citizens and that he respects the principle of good governance.
