Employers’ Federation welcomes minimum wage increase, while noting the majority of workers are already being paid more

President of the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF) Wayne Chen has welcomed the increase in the minimum wage, even as he notes that the majority of workers are being paid more than this amount.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness yesterday announced that as of June 1, the national minimum wage and that for industrial security guards moves to $15,000 per 40-hour work week.

He said the increase is to offset the impact of inflation.

Meantime, the JEF president says companies offering the minimum wage are finding it hard to attract workers.

He says increased economic activities among other things will lead to a sustainable rise in wages.
