Electoral Commission: JLP won Local Government Election; Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kingston will be selected on March 7

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kingston will be selected on March 7.

This following results from the February 26 Local Government Polls, where the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) won 20 divisions each in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) explained that where there is a tie, the Party which received the most votes in the Municipality will determine the Chairman or Mayor.

In the case of the KSAMC, the PNP won the majority of the votes and will make this determination.

The JLP will thereafter select the Deputy Mayor.

In the meantime, the ECJ has issued an update regarding the winner of the election.

Following Thursday’s final ballot count, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) indicated that JLP candidates won the majority of the seats in seven parishes, while the PNP won five parishes.

The EOJ also noted that the PNP won the majority of the divisions and Mayor of the Portmore Municipality.

However, in a press release last evening, the ECJ sought to clarify that results were presented by parishes, now known as Local Authorities and Municipalities.

It explained that with all the ballots counted, the JLP won the election with seven of the Local Authorities and the PNP won six of the Local Authorities, inclusive of the Portmore Municipality.
