The Early Childhood Commission (ECC) says a virtual meeting was held with parents last evening (January 20) to discuss the immediate closure of the New Discoveries Daycare and Preschool in Montego Bay, St James.

Education Minister, Fayval Williams ordered that the institution be closed in the wake of reports of child abuse at the facility.

In a statement, the ECC said an investigation was conducted yesterday after which the findings were shared with the Minister.

A report was then submitted to the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, and the Agency has also commenced an investigation into the matter.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, ECC’s Communications Manager Sophia Stewart says the children attending the school will be relocated to other early childhood institutions.

She also explains that based on the critical nature of the matter, the meeting with parents could not have waited until Monday.

Ms Stewart says the ECC and the Child Protection and Family Services Agency will provide collaborative counselling sessions.
