Dozens of commuters stranded this morning, while others had to wait longer than usual to access public transportation

Commuters in sections of the country were left stranded this morning, while others had to wait longer than usual, to access public transportation.

This, as some transport operators withdrew their services in a planned all-island strike, that did not receive support from all stakeholders.

The operators took action, to highlight their discontent with the mandatory suspension of driver’s licences, for the accumulation of 10 or more demerit points.

The transport operators’ concerns were previously brought to the government’s attention, and a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to address the concerns.

Several went ahead this morning with a withdrawal aimed at forcing government to act.

IRIE FM News understands that several roadways were also blocked this morning.

They include the Kempshot main road in St. James and the Temple Hall road in St. Andrew.

All Voice Transportation group president Lorraine Oscar Finnikin has urged persons to desist from blocking the roadways, while noting that the aim is to have a peaceful protest.

Meantime, Mr. Finnikin said that based on reports he has gotten, at least 60% of operators in the corporate area and other major towns have withdrawn their services.

He says reports indicate that operators in Portland and St. Mary have also supported the withdrawal of service.

Over in Manchester, it was business as usual. President of the Central Manchester Taxi Association, Shirley Johnson, said his members are not participating in the strike.

He said the island-wide strike is not organized while noting that the Transport Minister has indicated a willingness to hear the operators’ concerns.

In Westmoreland, there was some support for the withdrawal, but an equal number of operators stayed on the job.

President of the Westmoreland Taxi Association, Paul Maitland, said commuters were able to traverse most routes in the parish, despite delays in some cases.
