Classes at several St. Catherine schools shift online due to tensions in Spanish Town

Several schools in and around Spanish Town, St. Catherine shifted to the online learning modality this morning due to disruptions, following the fatal shooting of an alleged gang leader last night.

Dead is Othneil “Thickman” Lobban, who police say was a top leader of the One Order Gang.

Lobban was shot by police in St. Andrew at around 10pm.

His death has resulted in sections of St. Catherine being tense.

Speaking with Irie FM News, President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Dr. Mark Smith said some school principals in the parish made the decision to shift to the online modality out of an abundance of caution.

He said the safety of staff and students is paramount.

Dr. Smith said he hopes the police will continue their efforts to maintain peace and order in the area, so normal classes can resume.
