Civil society groups including environmentalists call for climate justice, following devastating Hurricane Melissa
Some civil society groups, including environmentalists, have called for climate justice, in the wake of the devastating hurricane Melissa.
The category 5 system made land fall in Jamaica last Tuesday.
In a statement, the representatives of 43 groups, claimed that hurricane Melissa was not a natural disaster; rather, it was a profound manifestation of climate injustice.
Among the concerned groups, is the Jamaica Environment Trust, (JET).
Chief Executive Officer, Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie said the storm is a direct consequence of global warming and decades of political inaction.
The groups want the government and global leaders attending the cop 30 meeting, now underway in Brazil, to act with urgency.
