Citizens urged to limit exposure to Melissa devastation to reduce stress and anxiety

Persons who feel stressed and anxious in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa are being urged to limit their exposure to news about the devastation.

Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kevin Goulbourne, noted that the storm was devastating, with loss of lives and livelihood.

He said over-exposure to images and videos of the disaster may cause people to feel over-whelmed.

The director stressed that persons should stay connected with their families and friends, as well as stay active to avoid over-exposure to news.

He is also encouraging individuals who need support to call the ministry’s help line at 888-639-5433 for counselling 24 hours per day, seven days per week, or send text messages to 876-838-4897.
