Citizens urged to avoid using candles during Hurricane Melissa’s passage due to fire hazard
Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) Stewart Beckford is discouraging the use of candles as Jamaicans prepare for the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
However, if persons must use candles they should take the necessary precautions to avoid fires.
Commissioner Beckford states that candles should be placed at least 3 feet away from flammable material.
He also underscores that persons must be especially vigilant at this time if they decide to prepare meals on the stove.
The fire chief is also imploring citizens to be cautious if they have to charge multiple devices.
He noted that too many devices must not be plugged into one extension.
