Citizens again urged to use generators safely to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

Citizens are again being urged to use and store generators properly to avoid accidental carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, making it impossible to detect without an alarm.

It is a natural byproduct of burning fuels, like gasoline or diesel which is used to power the generators many families rely on during power outages.

Since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, the Jamaica Fire Brigade has reported that about 7 people died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Clinical Coordinator for the Western Regional Health Authority,Dr. Delroy Fray cautioned that while generators are good, people must use them safely.
