Candidates in Local Government Elections to be nominated today

The candidates who will contest the upcoming Local Government Elections are expected to be nominated today.

The majority will be representing the country’s 2 main political groups, the Jamaica Labour Party and the Peoples National Party.

Others including a few independents have signaled an interest in contesting the local polls.

The Electoral Office has set 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as the time within which the candidates will go to their respective constituency office to be nominated.

The EOJ noted that councillors are being selected for 228 electoral divisions, across the 63 constituencies, while the Mayor of Portmore will be directly elected.

The candidates are required to bring with them the completed nomination form, which has been signed by 6 electors.

They will also be required to pay the nomination fee of $3,000.

The EOJ is expecting a well-coordinated, incident-free Nomination Day.

Election day is set for February 26.
