Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has indicated that shop operators using the Musgrave Market in Portland after its reconstruction would have to apply to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) for electricity.

Mr. McKenzie who was speaking during a tour of the market this morning (June 16) noted that the recent fire at the facility and the planned renovation works signal a new start, where the market will operate differently.

He said vendors would no longer be allowed to access electricity through illegal means in the market. He added that the Municipality cannot afford to pay an exorbitant bill.

He said after the market’s reconstruction, steps will be taken to engage the JPS regarding electricity solutions for the vendors.

Mr McKenzie also stressed that the renovation process will not happen overnight.

He noted, however, that arrangements have been made to allow vendors to ply their wares elsewhere in the interim.
