Speaking with IRIE FM news, Public Relations Officer at the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Emilio Ebanks noted that at least 25 firefighters were on the scene to distinguish the blaze.

 

He said the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Meantime, Mayor of Port Maria, Richard Creary, said he has taken steps to get assistance for the vendors.

 

He told IRE FM news that over forty vendors preparing to sell their produce over the weekend, had lost them in the blaze.

 

He said discussions are to take place with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to help the vendors.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for St Mary Central, Dr Morais Guy said he is also seeking assistance for the vendors.

 

With the market completely destroyed, Dr. Guy also pleaded with the Municipality to not be too aggressive when vendors try to sell their produce on the streets.
