EOJ says three observer missions have committed to observe the September 3 general election

Three observer missions have so far committed to observe the September 3 general election.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) says the confirmed missions are from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organization of American States (OAS) and Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE).

The OAS mission will be headed by the former Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Dr. Kenny Anthony.

The EOJ says following the final reconciliation, 184 candidates, were nominated on Monday, to contest the general election.

63 candidates were each nominated for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP), 43 for the Jamaica Progressive Party (JPP), 7 for the United Independents’ Congress, and 8 persons were nominated as Independent Candidates.

In the meantime, 6 candidates were confirmed as duly nominated for the by-elections in the Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens and Denham Town divisions.

The JLP and the PNP each had 3 candidates.

The EOJ says it has commenced the printing of ballot papers with the names of the candidates.

It adds that its preparations for the printing of voters’ lists, selection and placement of election day workers, as well as distribution of supplies, are advanced.

The EOJ notes that voting for the special services, that is, election day workers, police and military electors, will take place on Friday, August 29.
