Chief Justice Bryan Sykes says a number of the island’s courts are in need of new structures, not just rehabilitation. 

His comment follows concerns about the state of the island’s courts. 

The most recent concern was highlighted by the Opposition People’s National Party, which today called on the government to address the problem. 

Opposition spokesperson on Justice, Senator Donna Scott Motley noted a sickout earlier this month by clerks at the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court in protest of unacceptable working conditions including malfunctioning bathrooms, poor air quality and pest infestations.

Meanwhile, speaking at a Press Briefing hosted by the Judiciary on the condition of the island’s courts this morning, Chief Justice Sykes noted that the issue is more than maintenance.

He noted courts in St James, Manchester, St. Catherine and Hanover, which he says are in need of new structures, due to location and other issues.
